(Festival Dates: 24–25 June 2026) The Hemis Tsechu Festival is one of Ladakh’s most vibrant and spiritually significant celebrations, held annually at Hemis Monastery to honor the birth anniversary of Guru Padamasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. In 2026, the festival will be celebrated on June 24–25, drawing devotees and travelers from around the world. It is renowned for its mesmerizing Cham dances, where monks dressed in elaborate costumes and sacred masks perform ritual dances symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Accompanied by traditional music, the atmosphere becomes deeply spiritual and captivating. A rare highlight is the unveiling of a giant sacred Thangka of Guru Padamasambhava, displayed once every 12 years, making it a truly special occasion. Beyond its religious importance, the festival also offers a rich cultural experience, with locals dressed in traditional attire, creating a colorful and lively celebration that beautifully reflects Ladakh’s heritage. ✨

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Leh – Acclimatization

Airport: Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh

Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to Karma Lodge. Enjoy a welcome tea/coffee.

The day is reserved for rest and acclimatization to the high altitude. In the afternoon (around 3:30 PM), visit Shanti Stupa and explore Leh Market.

Overnight Stay: Leh – Karma Lodge

Day 2: Sham Valley Sightseeing

Distance: 140 km | Duration: 6–7 hours

After breakfast (9:00 AM), proceed for a full-day excursion covering:

• Hall of Fame Museum 
• Spituk Monastery 
• Gurdwara Pathar Sahib 
• Magnetic Hill 
• Indus & Zanskar River Confluence 

Continue to Alchi Village (arrival around 1:00–2:00 PM). Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to the historic Alchi Monastery (11th century).

Return to Leh by evening (5:00–6:00 PM).

Overnight Stay: Leh – Karma Lodge

Day 3: Hemis Tsechu Festival 

Distance: 45 km (one way) | Duration: 4 or 5  hours

After breakfast, drive to Hemis Monastery to attend the grand Hemis Tsechu Mask Festival. Witness the sacred Cham dances, where monks in elaborate masks and costumes perform spiritual rituals symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. 

The monastery courtyard comes alive with traditional music, cultural vibrancy, and devotion. Return to Leh by evening.

Day 4: Hemis Tsechu Festival 

Distance: 45 km (one way) | Duration: 2 or 3 hours

After breakfast, revisit Hemis Monastery to experience the second day of the festival. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the rituals, capture photography, and witness different performances.

Return to Leh by evening.

Overnight Stay: Leh – Karma Lodge

Day 5: Leh to Nubra Valley 

Distance: 125 km | Duration: 4–5 hours

After an early breakfast (8:00 AM), drive to Nubra Valley via Khardung La Pass (18,380 ft)—one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Stop for photography and panoramic views. Continue descending into Nubra Valley. En route, stop for lunch.

Visit:

• Diskit Monastery 
• 100-ft Maitreya Buddha Statue 

Later, proceed to Hunder Sand Dunes and enjoy a double-humped Bactrian camel ride.

Overnight Stay: Hunder Village – Hotel

Day 6: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake (via Shyok Valley)

Distance: 160 km | Duration: 6–7 hours

After breakfast, drive to Pangong Lake via the scenic Shyok Valley route, known for its rugged terrain and river crossings.

Arrive at Pangong Lake by afternoon (1:00–2:00 PM). Check into your resort/camp and enjoy lunch. Spend the evening walking along the lakeshore and witness the magical sunset over the lake, famous for its changing colors.

Day 7: Pangong Lake to Leh (via Chang La Pass)

Distance: 140 km | Duration: 6–7 hours

Early morning, enjoy the breathtaking sunrise at Pangong Lake, followed by breakfast.

Drive back to Leh via Chang La Pass (17,590 ft).

En route, visit:

• Thiksey Monastery 
• Druk Padma Karpo School (Rancho School) 
• Sindhu Ghat 

Arrive in Leh by evening (5:00–6:00 PM).

Day 8: Leisure Day in Leh

This day is free for relaxation or personal exploration. You may:
